Cooking Class: African-Asian Cuisine

In this hands-on cooking class, you'll experience the incredible fusion of African and Asian flavors as you prepare dishes from Suriname. This tiny South American country is home to people of Dutch, African, Indian, Indonesian and Indigenous descent, and their cuisine wonderfully reflects these different cultures. Your meal will begin with a traditional West African peanut soup. Then, you'll explore the Indonesian influences by making a soy and ginger-basted baked chicken served alongside bamie, Indonesian-style egg noodles from the island of Java. Lastly, you'll end your culinary evening by whipping up bojo, a rich cake made with coconut, cassava, sugar and coconut milk.

Chef Peggy was very nice, but this wasn’t a hands on cooking class. Very disappointed as the ramen was already made. Would not recommend the ramen class if you’re looking for a hands on class.

This is a review of the ramen class, not the chef. Chef Peggy is fantastic, but the ramen cooking class is NOT a cooking class. We were disappointed as it wasn’t what we expected. We arrived to a large group of people and did not actually get to cook or create anything. We sat around, listening to interesting history and knowledge about the dish and chefs. Then we got up to get our food and ate. The ramen broth was truly delicious and exceptional, but it wasn’t the experience we thought we would have. This was not hands on. Another side note, for how healthy the food was and made with such care I was surprised it was served in styrofoam bowls which leech chemicals into your food. Would not recommend if you’re looking for a hands on cooking class.

We had a great time. Chef Peggy is fun and passionate and knowledgeable. I’d definitely take another class with her.
